In 2003, I (Denise) was put on a very restrictive eating plan by my Homeopath, which excluded (among other things) sugar, gluten, and dairy. Unfortunately, all the sugar-free product available were full of artificial ingredients and made me feel even WORSE.
Seeing my frustration and disappointment, my Hubby, Neil, (armed with Accounting skills, but zero candy making knowledge) set about making me some of his own - in our kitchen - at home!!! Mine, however, needed to be delicious, healthy and have “no nasty stuff” such as artificial sweeteners or common food allergens. He aptly named them “Caring Candies”!It soon became very evident that there was a massive need for healthy sugarfree candies, so Neil approached various healthshops and pharmacies and soon several outlets wanted his candy so he approached a contract manufacturer to manufacture his Caring Candies.
Demand, however, soon exceeded their manufacturing capabilities so Neil and I decided it was time to take the bull by the horns and we moved into our first factory premises in 2007, hiring both skilled and unskilled labour from the local informal settlement.
We outgrew this factory within 4 months. We have since moved twice more, each time to food safety certified premises at least twice the size of the previous one and averaging a food safety audit score of 99.3%.
